June 10, 2008 Small towns need big supporters. Thompson Falls, Montana, population 1350, has John and Barbara Mosher. The Moshers own the local Subway Sandwich shop and Mosher Transport which provides busing services for local schools and fire crews. The Moshers are huge supporters and fans of local sports teams. Barbara is the co-President of the local high school Booster Club and the Chamber of Commerce. In 2003 the Moshers purchased Thompson Falls Feed and Fuel, a gas and convenience store located on the main thoroughfare through town. In addition to gas, the store offers groceries, animal feed and the only car wash bays in town. After purchasing the business, the Moshers learned that the business was not in as good of shape as had been represented. Undaunted, and in true Mosher style, they undertook to turn the business around. Through a bank loan on their property, the Moshers invested significant equity in the business. They replaced the roof, remodeled the bathrooms, and installed new sales monitoring and accounting software systems to tighten their control on expenses, operations and cash management. Through a separate construction loan the Moshers added an automatic car wash to the existing manual car washes, giving them the competitive advantage of having the only automatic car wash in Sanders County. The loan from MCDC paid off the construction loan and reimbursed an operating line of credit. With the help of MCDC, the Moshers will be able to grow their business, bringing the store to profitability and assuring the sustainability of a major business and economic hub in Thompson Falls.
